Díseart, the Dingle-based Institute of Education and Celtic Studies, will run its inaugural Music Summer School, Geantraí Chorca Dhuibhne, from July 25th to the 28th. The school will concentrate on the musical traditions of west Kerry and will be opened by Mr Muiris Ó Rochain, director of the Willie Clancy Summer School.
This will be the first school of its kind on the peninsula. There will be a special focus on the teaching and performance of tunes as well as the music and songs associated with the region. Expert tutors will coach participants in whistle, flute, box accordion, fiddle, pipes and sean-nós singing. This is a Gaeltacht area, so special emphasis will be placed on the Irish language.
The school will close each day's business with a session during which participants will perform with their tutors. On Saturday evening, the school will end with a concert which will bring together many wellknown musicians from Corca Duibhne.
