New York city's heat-related deaths rose to 20 at the weekend. That toll could still rise as the medical examiner's office continues to conduct autopsies, even as the weather has cooled off.

Authorities said the heat contributed to at least 50 deaths in the Midwest and East, with 164 others in California last week.
