The semi-state agency, Shannon Development, yesterday denied the company supports the siting of a "mega-dump" in the Silvermines area of north Tipperary.

The agency was commenting on a newspaper report which claimed that a confidential Shannon Development report has come out in favour of the controversial proposal by Waste Management Ireland, whose parent company in the US, Waste Management Inc, is the largest in the world.

A statement from the company said Shannon Development did not support the proposed Silvermines waste dump.

It adds: "Shannon Development's clear priority for the Silvermines is the establishment of Ireland's first mining heritage centre based at the old Shallee Mine, a project we believe would develop the tourism potential of the area, create significant local employment and be environmentally and economically sustainable."
