About 2,000 soccer supporters turned out at Dalymount Park in Dublin last night for a fundraising match held as a tribute to a seriously-ill teenage footballer.

The match between a Brian Kerr international XI and an underage team from the Bohemians, Cherry Orchard and Trinity Sports clubs was held in aid of the Oncology Unit at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, where Michael McKiernan (16) is a patient.

Mr Kerr said he had watched Michael McKiernan in international schoolboy trials last year. He was a promising player who was on the fringes of the national team.
