Hurling festivities turned into a nightmare for a Cork supporter yesterday who was the victim of a pre-match stabbing attack.

The 19-year-old man was taken to hospital yesterday after he was slashed several times in the face during an incident that took place in the suburb of Douglas around lunchtime.

Masked men entered a house at Willow Park, where some friends had gathered to watch the Cork-Kilkenny hurling clash on television. The raiders burst into the livingroom and, according to reports, singled out one man in the party, slashing him across the face with a knife.

The attackers then fled the scene, making their getaway on the South Link Road, in a small silver car, which is thought may have been a Toyota Yaris.

Emergency services took the injured man to Cork University Hospital where the teenager received a number of stitches to his face.

The house in Willow Park was immediately sealed off for technical examination.

The stabbing comes less than three weeks after a machete-style attack in the same locality. Gardaí are reportedly keeping an open mind as to whether the two incidents are related.

Gardaí in Douglas are appealing for witnesses to yesterday's attack to contact them on 021 4891115.
