A survey carried out over the three days of the National Ploughing Championships shows that 43.1 per cent of those voting in the Nice Referendum will vote Yes.
The survey, by the Farming Independent in conjunction with RTÉ's Ear to the Ground programme, shown last night, was carried out on more than 2,000 people who were interviewed about their attitudes to the Nice Treaty. According to the survey 28.7 per cent will vote No, 17.5 per cent have not yet decided how they will vote, while 10.6 per cent would not indicate how they intended to vote.
The split between the Yes and No vote currently stands at 60:40. Concern about falling farm incomes and general dissatisfaction with the Government were key issues raised by those who said they will vote No. Concerns about neutrality and uncertainty about CAP reform also featured strongly
A more detailed breakdown of the figures shows that 53 per cent of respondents who classified themselves as farm owners and working on a farm will vote Yes to Nice, while 35 per cent will vote No, and 12 per cent don't know how they will vote.
