US: Zacarias Moussaoui has told a court that he would like to see America attacked "every day" as it was on September 11th, 2001, and described as "disgusting" a naval officer who wept as she testified about the deaths of two of her subordinates in the attack on the Pentagon.

"I find it disgusting that some people will come here to share their grief.

"She is military, she should expect people at war with her to want to kill her," he said.

Moussaoui has admitted conspiring to commit terrorist acts on behalf of al-Qaeda but says he was not involved in the attacks on September 11th, 2001, when he was in jail for immigration violations.

A jury has already decided that he is eligible for the death penalty and must now choose whether to send him for execution or to prison for life.

Prosecutors say Moussaoui is responsible for the deaths that occurred on 9/11 because he did not give investigators information that could have prevented the attacks.

Moussaoui said he had "no regret, no remorse" about the attacks and expressed satisfaction at the pain and grief they caused. "We want to inflict pain on your country."

He criticised his defence lawyers for portraying him as insane and suggested that one of the lawyers, who is Jewish, actually wanted him to be executed.

"You have put your interests ahead of my life. For example, from the beginning of this case, I asked for a Muslim lawyer," he said.

The 37 year-old French citizen said he did not want to face the death penalty and he predicted that President George Bush would pardon him and send him to London.

"I haven't doubted it for one single second," he said.

Moussaoui criticised US support for Israel, a country he described as "just a missing star in the American flag", and said that Islam requires Muslims to be the world's superpower.

"We have to be the superpower. You have to be subdued. We have to be above you. Because Americans, you are the superpower, you want to eradicate us."

Prosecutor Robert Spencer asked Moussaoui if he woke up every day wanting to destroy the United States.

"To the best of my ability," Moussaoui responded.

"It was your choice to accept a suicide mission from Osama bin Laden," Mr Spencer said. "It was my pleasure," Moussaoui replied.
