A woman who wheeled out more than £80 worth of drink from a supermarket received a suspended prison sentence of one month yesterday. Bernie Mitchell (55) of Lower Oriel Street, Dublin, pleaded guilty to stealing £81.90 worth of beer cans from Crazy Prices, Crumlin, on September 23rd.

The court heard the defendant, who has 27 previous convictions, walked out of the store with the drink in a shopping trolley and was about to get into a taxi when stopped by security men. Judge William Early imposed the suspended sentence after being told the woman was a deserted wife who had three children on drugs and a number of grandchildren to look after.
