Suspended terms for Navan men

Two brothers who have played minor and senior football for Meath have been given suspended jail terms for assault

Two brothers who have played minor and senior football for Meath have been given suspended jail terms for assault. Barry Callaghan (26) and Keith Callaghan (19), Boyerstown, Navan, admitted assaulting Mr Brendan Johnson on July 7th in Navan last year.

Trim Circuit Court was told the brothers followed Mr Johnson and his friends outside a takeaway, and Barry Callaghan knocked him to the ground. Both then inflicted blows to his head. Mr Johnson suffered a broken jaw, neck injuries and facial abrasions.

The court was told the men had paid a substantial sum by way of compensation to the victim and had another £5,000 in court yesterday for a Navan- based charity.

Judge Ray Groarke suspended a 12-month sentence for each man on condition they keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
