British army technical experts have defused what police described as a "viable device" in north Belfast.
Police called the army in when the suspicious object was found on Newington Street this morning. There were no injuries.
Meanwhile, police in Portadown, Co Armagh are investigating an explosion in the town last night. A building block was thrown at a house and a device with gunpowder was later discovered and made safe.
A PSNI spokesman said the incident was not sectarian, nor was it related to the ongoing loyalist feud.
