The chief constable of a police force which mounted a bungled raid in which a naked and unarmed man was shot dead has resigned.
Sussex Chief Constable Mr Paul Whitehouse's move comes a day after Mr David Blunkett called on his employers to consider sacking him.
Mr Whitehouse's resignation follows criticism of his decision to go ahead with promotions and pay rises for two of the officers involved in the raid. Suspected drugs dealer James Ashley (39) was shot dead by officers.
Sussex Police Authority said Mr Whitehouse will leave his post on September 25th this year. The statement added: "Arrangements will be put in hand to appoint his successor. The police authority will continue to work with and support the force in providing policing in Sussex."
Mr Whitehouse says there is "no evidence" he had done anything wrong.
Mr Whitehouse said: "I am happy for my judgment to be questioned but I have never knowingly misled anyone, withheld information from anyone or behaved dishonestly."
