Cricket: Graeme Swann has been handed a shock recall by England for the opening one-day international against Sri Lanka in preference to Monty Panesar.

Recalled to the squad seven years since his only other appearance against South Africa in Bloemfontein, Swann was expected to be the back-up spinner for the five-match series starting in Dambulla.

But with the Test squad due to be finalised in the next few weeks, the selectors chose to include Swann to test his temperament prior to that pre-Christmas tour.

It was a stunning blow for Panesar, who claimed impressive figures of 8-2-28-1 on his previous one-day international appearance against India at Lord's three weeks ago.

Swann's inclusion will, however, stiffen the batting order and he was due to bat at number seven to help the lower order which began with Stuart Broad, making his first international appearance since being hit for six sixes in an over by India's Yuvraj Singh in the ICC World Twenty20.

Broad was due to supplement Ryan Sidebottom and James Anderson in attack while  Durham wicketkeeper-batsman Phil Mustard was handed his England debut afterbeing drafted into the squad as a replacement for the injured Matt Prior.

Essex left-hander Alastair Cook was also recalled to form a new opening partnership with Mustard having been dropped for England's final match of the  NatWest Series against India after scoring only four runs in his three previous matches.
