The Swedish man who was missing for almost two years on the Kerry mountains was buried yesterday at the Muslim cemetery in Passage West, Co Cork.
The body of Olof Jansson (22) was recovered from the Horses Glen area of Mangerton Mountain, Killarney, last Friday after being spotted by a local farmer the previous day.
A search involving helicopter, mountain and water rescue teams, his comrades from the Swedish special forces, walking clubs, clairvoyants and diviners, began in late December 2004. It failed to recover the missing man, whose body was found close to the spot from where he was last documented.
He had been on his honeymoon at the home of his mother-in-law, Ellen Callaghan, in Kilgarvan shortly after Christmas 2004 and had set out on a three-day trek from Mangerton westward to Carrauntoohil. He had sent a text message from the top of Mangerton.
Dental records sent from Sweden proved crucial in the quick identification, Sgt Tom Tobin said yesterday.
A Muslim burial ceremony conducted by clerics from Scotland and Sweden was held in O'Connor's funeral home in Kenmare.
The ceremonies were attended by his wife Mariam, his father Sven and other friends and family members who travelled from Sweden and from Scotland, where Mr Jansson and his wife were students.
