Taipei - Taiwan yesterday denounced China for answering repeated friendly overtures with hostility, saying this had prompted President Lee Tenghui's fresh declaration that the island is a separate state.
The chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council, Mr Su Chi, told reporters that Taiwan had tried to shelve the sovereignty issue by formulating national unification guidelines in 1991, in the hope of creating greater room for co-operation with China.
"But just look at what they did in reciprocation. They waged verbal threats, lobbed ballistic missiles into waters near Taiwan, broke off talks and kept squeezing our international space."
