The ESB last night warned public works contractors to take extreme care, after a number of incidents involving damage to the electricity system in Dublin.

Last night two drivers, a man and woman, were being treated in James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, after suffering electric shock when their two vehicles became entangled in wire near the Ashtown gate of the Phoenix Park. Two cable-carrying poles earlier had been knocked down by a public works contractor, according to the ESB.

Some 40 homes in Churchtown were without electricity yesterday because of damage by contractors.
