A PROMINENT Palestinian human rights defender will speak about the 750 people currently held under "administrative detention" by Israel at a series of meetings.
Sahar Francis, a Palestinian-Israeli lawyer and director of Addameer - an NGO working to support the rights of Palestinian prisoners - will also meet representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs, its development assistance branch Irish Aid, and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.
She is in Ireland as a guest of Amnesty International.
Under "administrative detention" people are held without charge or trial, and are often not told why they are being held.
Programmes director for Amnesty International Ireland Noeleen Hartigan said: "We believe that all prisoners, including those held in administrative detention, must be charged with a recognisable criminal offence and given a fair trial within a reasonable time or else be released."
Ms Francis spoke in Dublin last night, and will be at the Irish Centre for Human Rights in NUI Galway at noon today and at the Absolute Hotel in Limerick city at 8pm.
