DUBLINERS GOT a shock yesterday as they discovered a giant new statue on Grafton Street. The work, Patefaction, is 5.5m high (18ft) and is made of four stainless steel units suspended on a stainless steel frame. Each panel is designed to swing in the wind.

Organised by Solomon Fine Art, the piece is the latest sculpture to appear as part of Grafton Street’s temporary public art space programme running in conjunction with Dublin City Council. Final landscaping and repairs to the paving are expected to be completed on Monday and the work will remain on display for a year.

Its creator, British sculptor Angela Conner, is also responsible for the tall wind mobile, Irish Wave, at Park West in Dublin. She has had work displayed at 10 Downing Street, the Carnegie Museum of Modern Art in Pittsburgh and the Jewish Museum of Modern Art in New York. Solomon Fine Art approached the council four years ago with the idea of creating a temporary space for sculpture at the top of Grafton Street.
