The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and the Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern will hold separate meetings in Dublin today with the new Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain.

Mr Hain yesterday met US President George Bush's special envoy to Northern Ireland, Mitchell Reiss, who vowed to do all he could to help that process. The Taoiseach will meet with Mr Reiss tomorrow.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair is due to hold his first talks at Downing Street tomorrow with Gerry Adams since the Sinn Féin leader appealed last month to the IRA to consider abandoning armed struggle for the democratic alternative.

Mr Blair will hold talks tomorrow with the Democratic Unionist leader, the Rev Ian Paisley, for the first time since his party triumphed in Northern Ireland's Local Government and Westminster elections, taking nine seats to the rival Ulster Unionists' one.
