Taoiseach Bertie Ahern tonight nominated Maire Geoghegan-Quinn for a second term at the European Court of Auditors.

The former Fianna Fail TD and Justice Minister was first appointed in 2000 to the court, which examines the financial running of the EU. Her term, together with that of seven other members of the court, will expire in March next year.

Mr Ahern said the Government was happy to nominate her for re-appointment so that she could continue to ensure the citizens of Europe obtained maximum value for the funds spent through the EU budget.

"Maire Geoghegan-Quinn has given outstanding service on the European Court of Auditors where she is making a substantial contribution to the work of this important EU institution," he said. The appointment carries a salary in excess of € 180,000 plus expenses.

Ms Quinn, once tipped to be the first female Taoiseach, bowed out of national politics in 1997 after a 20-year career. She blamed media intrusion into her private life following the reporting of an incident involving her younger son.

The Budgetary Control Committee of the European Parliament will consider the list of nominees for the eight vacancies on the Court after holding hearings. It is expected to give its opinion in the Autumn and will make its decision after receiving the opinion of the European Parliament.
