Taoiseach formally appoints McDowell as Tánaiste

The Taoiseach has formally appointed the new Progressive Democrats leader, Michael McDowell, as Tánaiste.

The Taoiseach has formally appointed the new Progressive Democrats leader, Michael McDowell, as Tánaiste.

Bertie Ahern made the appointment before yesterday's Cabinet meeting, at which Mr McDowell was congratulated by his fellow Ministers.

Mr McDowell took up the responsibilities of Tánaiste immediately, in addition to his role as Minister for Justice.

The appointment is made by the Taoiseach without the need for formal Dáil or Cabinet approval or for the receipt of a seal of office from the President.

At the Cabinet meeting, Mr Ahern thanked the outgoing tánaiste, Mary Harney, for her work as minister for enterprise and employment and as Minister for Health, where she remains.

Mr McDowell was elected unopposed as new leader of the PDs on Monday.
