THE Taoiseach has intervened in the case of Robert Bright (15), from Co Meath who is charged in New York in connection with the robbery of the Doughty Deli in Lawrence, Long Island, last December.

Mr Bruton has asked the Nassau County District Attorney, Mr Denis Dillon, to consider the humanitarian aspects of the case, according to the Irish Consulate.

"The Taoiseach indicated through the consulate his interest in the case," said Mr Dermot Brangan. "He testified to the family's bona fides and made a representation to the district attorney specifying the humanitarian aspects that apply to the case."

The boy's mother, Mrs Mary Bright, said the Taoiseach grew up about two miles from her family in Dunboyne, Co Meath, and knows her own mother pretty well. "He's known my family for years and he has taken a big interest," she said. "The consulate has offered to help any way they can."

Robert Bright is expected to be formally indicted today. Sources speculated that he could be charged as a juvenile in an adult court, which would result in a considerably lighter sentence than the 20 years he now faces.
