Layoffs will begin at Tara Mines today, when about 30 of the 600-strong workforce will be let go, with a further 200 redundancies by December 15th.
SIPTU is picketing the Navan lead and zinc plant as talks begin on the dispute over contract miners. The talks are being facilitated by Labour councillor Mr Brian Fitzgerald and Rights Commissioner Ms Janet Hughes. They brokered the agreement which averted the mine's closure in February.
