For the first time in more than 160 years, the tea rooms and book shop at the hill of Tara in Co Meath were shut yesterday after its proprietor said he feared for the safety of his six staff.
Michael Maguire also said he would be reporting to the gardaí later this week an assault on him by a member of the public. He was also led to believe that others were considering robbing the shop.
His family has run Maguire's on the hill for six generations. "The last time we shut was when Daniel O'Connell held a monster meeting here."
The hill attracted large crowds over the weekend as it is the weekend closest to the summer solstice.
