THE failure to convict anyone over Dublin's gangland killings could erode public confidence in the gardai, Democratic Left TD Mr Eric Byrne has warned.
Gardai in north Dublin were yesterday investigating a number of theories about the killing of the drug dealer and robber, Gerry Lee, an associate of the leading Dublin criminal known as the Monk.
Mr Byrne called for a special task force to be set up to investigate the seven gangland killings in less than a year. No one has been charged over the deaths.
He said: "Many of these murders appear to have been carried out by professional hitmen and the failure to charge anyone in connection with these crimes could lead to a lack of public confidence in the gardai.
"While the recent killings may not be directly linked to one another, it is clear that they form a pattern of drug-related gang activity which is rapidly turning parts of our capital city into no-go areas
