A Limerick taxi driver who was struck on the head with a hammer in a road rage style attack received severe injuries to his head.

Mr Ger Fox of the Limerick Association of Taximen said the driver received 14 stitches to his forehead, seven to his face and had four teeth broken with a further eight teeth misaligned.

The taxi driver was assaulted by a man on Monday at about 4.30p.m. at Roches Street. The incident occurred as a result of comments between the two men a out their driving ability.

A man in a pick up truck rushed at the driver with a hammer and hit him on the head. The taxi driver was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital and the attacker fled from the scene. Gardai say they are following a positive lend.
