SIPTU taxi drivers will hold an emergency general meeting today to consider how to pressure the Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, to address the issues affecting taxi drivers since deregulation.

The meeting will take place this afternoon, at 2.30 p.m. in Erin's Isle Hall, Finglas, Dublin.

Over the past month SIPTU drivers have been holding intermittent stoppages mainly at Dublin Airport, but also at Heuston Station and Busaras.

The taxi drivers stopped their protests at Dublin Airport and elsewhere last Thursday and today's meeting will decide if any further action is to be taken.

The drivers say they are disappointed that there is no interim taxi regulator.

However, SIPTU say they welcome the appointment of Mr Jimmy Farrelly, chairperson of the Commission for Taxis.

"We see this as the first step towards appointing a full-time regulator for the industry - hopefully within the next 12 months - so as to bring stability back to the industry and public confidence back to the service," said SIPTU Dublin taxi drivers' branch official Mr Jerry Brennan.
