Boxing: Irish amateur boxer Katie Taylor was crowned world champion today after defeating Annabella Farias in the lightweight final of the Women's World Championships in New Delhi, India.
The 20-year-old from St Fergal's club in Bray followed up yesterday's impressive semi-final win over then reigning world champion Tatyana Chalaya with today's 31-14 points win against the Argentinian Farias in the three-round bout.
Peter Taylor, Katie's father and coach, could hardly contain his emotions when speaking to RTEfrom Talkatota Stadium where the final was staged.
"It is a great moment for us and for Irish amateur boxing," said
Taylor. "Last year, we suffered a setback at these championships
but Katie was determined to get it right this time and she did just
that and more. It is a great feeling.
"She boxed brilliantly today and even though it went the
distance the winning margin was still seventeen points and she was
in control all the way.'
Taylor, who is also tipped to win the Boxer of the Tournament Award, is expected to return home on Saturday after tomorrow's closing ceremony.
