Boxing:Katie Taylor landed the International Boxing Association (AIBA) World female boxer of the year award at a ceremony in Almaty, Kazakhstan yesterday and dedicated to everyone who helped make female boxing an Olympic sport.
The three-time world lightweight, current European and EU champion, picked up her latest accolade for the second time after scooping the World award in Moscow two years ago.
“I would like to thank AIBA for this award. It’s a huge honour to receive this above all the great female boxers in the world, said Taylor, who received the title from AIBA president Dr Ching-Kuo Wu.
“I’m so happy that women’s boxing is included in the London Olympics and I would like to collect this award on behalf of everyone who made that happen. In London 2012 we are going to show the world what women’s boxing can do.”
Russian world champion Artur Beterbiyev, who defeated Ireland’s Ken Egan at the 2006 European Championships, was named AIBA world male boxer of the year.
