The President, Mrs McAleese, and the Nobel laureate poet Dr Seamus Heaney were confirmed honorary fellows of Trinity College, Dublin, yesterday at a special ceremony in the college.

The announcement of new fellows and scholars was made by the Provost, Dr Thomas Mitchell, surrounded by the board of the college in full academic gowns and caps on the steps of the public theatre in Front Square.

The ceremony one of the oldest and most colourful in Trinity College is part of the annual Trinity Week, in which special events are organised both by the college and the student body.

The following were elected to fellowship: Frederick Richard Falkiner, Ailbhe Noirin Maire Ni Chasaide, Stephen John Matterson, Padraig Cunningham, Hilary Delany, Maureen JunkerKenny, Judith Margaret Mossman, Patrick John Prendergast, Sean Duffy.
