Reaction Local Fine Gael deputy and MEP Gay Mitchell said it was "astonishing" that more people were not killed in the collisions in Bluebell involving the stolen bus.

The bus collided with several cars near the Bluebell Luas stop. A woman passenger in one car was killed.

"The death toll could have actually been much higher as the Luas had just pulled in. Bluebell is my home parish and people are absolutely shocked and horrified."

Mr Mitchell said his thoughts were with the family of the woman who had been killed.

"My thoughts are also with those who were injured, including the gardaí who were injured in the line of duty."

Labour Party transport spokeswoman Róisín Shortall also paid tribute to the gardaí.

"I would like to praise the bravery of those gardaí who tried to stop this man. They risked their own safety in an effort to prevent further tragedy.

"I welcome the fact that the Garda investigation into this terrible tragedy is already under way as we need clarity as to what exactly happened and how this awful event unfolded."

Ms Shortall said her sympathies were with the family of the woman who was killed. "We are also concerned for those injured and hope that they make full recoveries."

Conor Faughnan of AA Roadwatch said the area where the incident happened was "one of the busiest stretches of road" in the country. There were fewer cars about yesterday as it was Sunday but it was still busy as the Naas Road was a main artery.
