The establishment of a register containing information on lobbyists has been sought "as a matter of urgency" by the former Fianna Fail minister, Mr Michael O'Kennedy TD, writes Kevin Rafter, Political Reporter.

The register should include the qualifications of individuals employed as lobbyists, the clients and interests they represent as well as the issues on which they lobby and the fees they receive.

Mr O'Kennedy said the public was "entitled to know and be assured that their elected representatives will discharge their responsibilities solely in accordance with the constitution and the law".

The Government has already rejected a private members Bill published by the Labour Party to require lobbyists to register their interests.
