There should be a public inquiry into the cost of the Drogheda bypass, which has overrun its budget, said Louth TD Mr Fergus O'Dowd.
He told a meeting of Drogheda Borough Council this week that €100,000 had already been spent rectifying a design fault at Dardistown bridge. The motorway is due to be officially opened by the Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, on June 3rd.
The motorway, which will link the Balbriggan and Dunleer motorways and form part of the Dublin-Belfast road, is behind schedule; its official opening day was April 29th.
It will alleviate traffic gridlock in Drogheda, which is one of the worst blackspots in the country.
Meanwhile, Drogheda councillors are angry that the Mayor of Drogheda is not acknowledged on the official plaque for the motorway, although the names of the chairpersons of Louth and Meath County Councils will be included.
Standing orders were suspended at the monthly meeting to debate the issue. "We are literally being bypassed and the only recognition of Drogheda will be by tolling motorists entering and leaving the town," said Cllr Frank Godfrey.
"We have had a mayor in Drogheda for over 800 years and it would be an insult to the council, the people of Drogheda and the mayor of the day," said Deputy Mayor Frank Maher.
