Secondary teachers have accepted a pay increase of more than 19 per cent for correcting this year's Leaving Cert papers. Exam supervisors will also receive a pay increase of 8 per cent under the new agreement worked out by the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland, and the Department of Education.

Under the deal, the pay for correcting scripts in all subjects has been increased. The 19 per cent increase represents the average rise across all subjects.

The Leaving and Junior Cert exams begin next Wednesday.
