The Teachers' Union of Ireland has demanded amending legislation be passed before the local elections next summer in order to reconstitute VECs on a more democratic basis.

The TUI president, Mr Joe Carolan, while welcoming the Minister for Education, Mr Martin's commitment to statutory representation on VECs, yesterday demanded the implementation of the Murray report, which recommended VEC membership should comprise seven public representatives, three teachers, three parents, one administrative staff member, three representatives of local business and trade unions, and three nominees from local voluntary and community groups.
