VENICE - Police fired tear gas to disperse left-wing demonstrators who jostled businessmen and politicians as the trial resumed yesterday of eight men who occupied the St Mark's belltower in Venice.

Around loo demonstrators shouted slogans and hurled objects at sympathisers of a group called the Free Federalist Entrepreneurs of Europe (LIFE), which accuses the Rome government of smothering business with high taxes, and has raised funds to pay for the defence of the eight men who stormed the belltower in a separatist stunt on May 8th.
