Fr Joe Foley told mourners that the local community could "scarcely believe" the news that the young third-year student had tragically lost his life.

"The news of Kevin's death was a message which shocked and saddened all who knew Kevin. We could scarcely believe it then and we can scarcely believe it now." he said. Following the Requiem Mass, Kevin was laid to rest in the new cemetery in Knockainey.

Mourners were led by Kevin's parents, Kate and Jim, his sister Mandy and his uncles - Vincent and Declan Tierney - who also suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Former Irish rugby international Eddie Halvey (36) was arrested at the scene of the crash on suspicion of drink-driving and was later charged and released on bail. It is understood gardaí are preparing a file for the DPP on other matters relating to the crash.
