A YOUNG woman has been charged in connection with the death of her brother, who was stabbed at party in their uncle's house.
Caroline Brennan (18), Love Lane, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, was charged on Saturday night with assault causing serious harm to her brother, Michael Brennan (22).
Mr Brennan, Church Avenue, Castlecomer, died at his uncle's house on Barrack Street in the town at about 3.30am on Tuesday.
Emergency services were called to the small yellow bungalow where Mr Brennan had been socialising with friends.
He was discovered with a knife wound to his upper body and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms Brennan appeared before Judge Gerry Furlong at a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court charged with assault on Mr Brennan under section 4 of the non-fatal offences against the person act.
Ms Brennan, dressed in a grey hoodie and blue jeans, sat between her parents Eileen and Bill Brennan in the courthouse.
Sgt Teresa Phillips of Kilkenny Garda station told the court she arrested and charged Ms Brennan with the assault on Mr Brennan at 3.47pm yesterday. Sgt Phillips said she replied, "No, I have nothing to say", when charged.
Michael Lanigan, solicitor for Ms Brennan, told the court he would not be making an application for bail at this stage. He said his client was not working and he made an application for legal aid.
He asked Judge Furlong that the court recommend that Ms Brennan be seen by a doctor as soon as she gets to the Dóchas Centre at Mountjoy.
He said that because of "her tender years", he would be "concerned that she saw a doctor as soon as possible".
Judge Furlong said he would request that Ms Brennan received medical attention on her arrival at the centre.
Insp Liam Connolly of Kilkenny Garda station made an application that Ms Brennan be remanded to the next sitting of Kilkenny District Court. Judge Furlong remanded Ms Brennan in custody by consent to appear again at the court on Monday next.
