A teenage boy with 76 previous convictions and charged with taking nearly £40,000 from a Securicor security van in a violent robbery has been remanded to Mountjoy Prison by Judge Mary Collins at the Dublin Children's Court.

The 16-year-old and another teenage boy have denied taking part in the robbery outside the AIB bank on the Lower Drumcondra Road, Dublin, on October 22nd last.

Some £37,500 was taken in the robbery in which the Securicor guard was also attacked. Both have denied the robbery.

The 16-year-old youth is also facing a charge for biting a senior garda when it is alleged he attempted to escape from custody after his arrest on October 30th.

The youth had 57 convictions for robberies, car thefts and assaults when he was arrested in connection with the robbery. However, he has never served a sentence for any of those offences.

Since his last appearance at the Dublin Children's Court, a further 19 convictions had been recorded against him, and it is alleged that he threatened to "blow a garda's head off" and assaulted him on another occasion.

The youth had allegedly assaulted the garda when he was arrested for breaching bail conditions set by a judge at an earlier appearance in the court.

The youth was remanded to St Patrick's Institution but was later given bail on condition that he keep away from the city centre. He was arrested for breaching these conditions on November 20th.

At yesterday's sitting of the Children's Court, books of evidence were served on the defendants. Judge Collins said the case would be sent for trial at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. It was adjourned until April 16th.
