A boy and girl in their teens were killed when struck by an oncoming train along a section of track near Leixlip, Co Kildare, last night.

The accident occurred at Louisa Bridge on the Maynooth to Dublin line shortly after 9.30 p.m.

An Iarnrod Eireann spokesman said the driver of the 5.45 p.m. Sligo-Dublin express service sighted the teenagers, believed to be aged 14-16, but could not brake in time. The girl was pronounced dead at James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, Dublin. Her companion underwent surgery and died early this morning. It remains unclear why the two climbed on to the track, gardai said.

Train passengers were taken by bus to Dublin and the line closed until 10.15 p.m. Morning commuter services to Dublin will not be affected, Iarnrod Eireann said.
