Templemore lends its name to walkway in French town

A walkway in a French town will be officially named after Templemore in Co Tipperary in a ceremony this Saturday.

A walkway in a French town will be officially named after Templemore in Co Tipperary in a ceremony this Saturday.

A 19-member delegation of community representatives, led by the Mayor of Templemore, Ms Lily O'Brien, will travel to Prémilhat in the Auvergne region today to witness the signing of a twinning charter between the two towns.

A local walkway will be named The Templemore Way and a native Irish tree will be planted there.

The initial approach for the twinning relationship was made by Prémilhat twinning committee members after they discovered that Templemore bore striking similarities to their town. Like Templemore, Prémilhat is in a rural area and the nearby town of Montlucon is home to the national police college.

Last month Templemore councillors and local council officials were part of a 54-member delegation that spent a week in the sun-kissed Adriatic coastal town of Potenza Picena, in Italy, for the signing of a separate twinning charter with that town.

But any notion that the councillors are enjoying a junket spree on hard-earned taxpayers' money can be knocked on the head, according to Templemore's town clerk, Mr Tom McGrath.

He said the cost to the public purse for the two trips will amount to 280, the cost of two pieces of Tipperary Crystal bought as official gifts for the two twin towns on behalf of the people of Templemore.

Fianna Fáil councillor Mr Jim O'Shea said: "People have been so enthusiastic about the twinnings that they have funded both trips from their own pockets."
