Ten people were wounded in Indian Kashmir today when Islamic militants threw a grenade at security forces and missed their target, police said.
Kashmir is at the heart of a military standoff between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan and New Delhi is battling a separatist revolt against its rule in the state.
"The incident took place behind the district hospital" in Rajouri town, 175 km (110 miles) north of Jammu, winter capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, a police official said.
He said the militants hurled the grenade at security personnel in a bunker outside the hospital but missed. The grenade exploded on the roadside, injuring 10 pedestrians.
The official said the state had seen rising violence in recent weeks ahead of elections planned in late September and early October. India hopes the polls will bolster the legitimacy of its rule in the disputed Himalayan region.
The attack occurred in the same town where authorities said last week they foiled an attempted raid by heavily armed militants who sneaked into a high-security zone housing top civilian and police officials and their families.
