TAOISEACH BRIAN Cowen yesterday launched a book exploring the 150-year history of Terenure College in south Dublin.

The book Terenure College 1860-2010: a History was compiled by Prof Fergus D’Arcy, an emeritus professor of history at University College Dublin.

Brendan McCauley, a history teacher in Terenure College, said the school was one of the first to become a member of the GAA, joining the organisation in 1885 but, by 1920, rugby had become the school’s main sport.

It was difficult to figure exactly why this was, as there were no minutes or policy statements from the time, he said. Past pupils include rugby player Girvan Dempsey, actors Donal McCann and Bosco Hogan, Ulster Bank chief executive Cormac McCarthy and RTÉ presenter and businessman Mike Murphy.
