The supermarket chain Tesco last night said there was no need for customers in the Republic to be concerned about eating the store's own-brand lasagne.
It was responding to a warning to Tesco customers in the UK to return three of its lasagne brands because they could be contaminated with metal shavings.
A UK spokesperson for Tesco said the shavings were found in a manufacturing plant and, while tests of lasagne had not found any metal shavings in the food, safety standards required it to take action and recall the packs as a precaution.
Another spokesperson, for the supermarket chain in Dublin, confirmed that none of the three brands of product withdrawn from the UK market was stocked in the Republic.
