Bratz is a billion-dollar global franchise: more than 150 million Bratz have been sold worldwide, and toy-maker MGA Entertainment earns around €2.4 billion a year from the dolls and associated merchandise, which includes magazines, DVDs, duvet sets, sleepover tents and hair-colour kits.

The original Bratz dolls arrived in 2001, created by Isaac Larian, an Iranian immigrant to California with a degree in civil engineering.

This month sees the release of the first live-action feature film based on the high-school adventures of the four original Bratz: Yasmin, Sasha, Jade and Cloe.
