Five Irish university courses have been selected as new projects to promote European integration, complementing science as well as arts studies. There were a total of 503 applications, of which some 177 projects were chosen. They will receive an EU contribution of ecu 20,000 per year. Of the total, 46 are in the UK, closely followed by 41 in Italy. The money will be disbursed over three years, after which the university will be expected to finance the projects for at least four years. The programme will also see the creation of 45 new Jean Monnet Chairs which will support the establishment of full-time teaching posts in European studies. In addition, 78 European modules will be included in courses followed by education, science and engineering students.
