This anthology runs from early Romantics such as Gustavo Adolfo Becquer to contemporary fiction-writers such as Juan Goytisolo. Spanish fiction has tended in general to be realist rather than imaginative, but a surreal streak surfaces frequently, as well as a kind of High Camp in ValleInclan and strong melodrama in the story by the illustrious novelist Emilia Pardo Bazan. Other pieces are predictably macabre, and at over 350 pages long, the book packs in plenty of variety.
