The weather will improve over the next few days, but the public should brace themselves for more wind and heavy rain this weekend, according to Met Eireann.
However, Mr Michael Cleary, forecaster, described the recent weather as exceptional and predicted the conditions would not be as bad.
He said today conditions would be windy with occasional showers, while tomorrow would be dry with the winds dying down.
The rain would return on Friday, and wet and windy conditions would prevail for the weekend.
"We'll see a brief improvement, a short-term reprieve, with Thursday likely to be the best day.
"While there will be wind and rain this weekend it's unlikely what we had last weekend will be repeated," he added.
Temperatures may also drop midweek with the possibility of night frost tonight and tomorrow night.
