The great men from the 'gentle county' win the day

Cork was host to three special events this week. The first? It happened last Sunday by the Lee in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. This event was the most historic and brilliant of them all. It involved great men of "the gentle county" - Waterford.

Sunday was the day that Waterford hurlers beat Tipperary in the Senior Munster Final. Up the Decies! Their last victory in the Munster final was in 1963. Comhgháirdeachas, a fheara áille.

In Kinsale later in the week, an exhibition by Shane Johnson in the Kent Gallery attracted a large crowd, including the recently married actor Lorcan Cranitch, who opened the show, with his wife, RTÉ's Susan Jackson, beside him. Cranitch is currently filming in Plymouth in the new ITV Hornblower series.

Professor Gerry Wrixon, of UCC, and his wife, Marcia Wrixon, were there, along with the artist's proud parents, Harold and Chloe Johnson. The show runs until Monday, July 15th.

Another opening this week in Warren's Boathouse Gallery, Castletownsend, west Cork, attracted a large crowd. They gathered for the unveiling of paintings by French artist Dominique Van Den Broeck.

Although the night, hosted by Margaret Warren, was cold and wet outside, guests including Teresa O'Donovan from Skibbereen, Colette O'Sullivan, the local postmistress, William and Catherine Crozier and Ann Shaw from Reen, didn't mind at all.

One of the most popular paintings was Green Town, in which all the houses and townsfolk are in different shades of green. The exhibition will travel to the Signal Arts Centre in Bray later this month. It continues in Warren's Boathouse Gallery until next Friday, July 12th.
