The editor of The Irish Times, Mr Conor Brady, is to stand down from the editorship of the newspaper later this year. He has asked the chairman of the board of The Irish Times Ltd, Mr Brian Patterson, to initiate the processes for the appointment of a new editor.
Mr Brady has been editor since 1986. He first joined the newspaper as a trainee reporter after graduating from UCD in 1969.
Mr Patterson said: "Conor Brady has made an outstanding contribution to The Irish Times and has successfully steered the newspaper through turbulent times, always maintaining its quality and high standards." He said that Mr Brady would remain as a non-executive member of the board of The Irish Times Ltd for a period after his retirement.
Mr Brady said he was certain the time was right for a new phase in the editorship. "With the completion of the restructuring of the company, it is time for a new editor to take the paper through to its next phase of success and development." He said he expected a new editor to be in place within about three months.
