'The peace and quiet is unbelievable'

"Paradise on a plate" is how Mr John McGregor describes his new ground floor apartment on Forestwood Avenue, Ballymun.

"I lived for 16 years on the sixth floor of the Seán McDermott tower. It has taken a bit of adjustment to get used to living on the ground floor. It's very strange. I have been used to going up lifts, waiting for lifts and coping with broken lifts for so long."

Now three days in his new home, which looks on to a communal courtyard, Mr McGregor says he is enjoying the "great sense of freedom and space" and compares it to being on holidays.

The Forestwood Avenue development comprises a total of 87 houses and apartments. Twenty-nine have been handed over to date and the rest will be occupied within the next month.

Ms Barbara Deering, who is making the move this morning, is delighted. With three children, the extra space and garden were a big bonus.

"It's gorgeous - I can't wait. Having a garden is brilliant because I wouldn't let them out of the flats, but now I'll be able to keep an eye on them. I have been living in Ballymun for 30 years altogether."

For Kirsty Cullen (11), the move from Seán McDermott tower to an apartment in Forestwood is " like being in a hotel and the sun is always shining".

For her mother, Eileen, life in a small apartment complex, where she can keep an eye on Kirsty all the time, is a big improvement on living in a tower.

"The peace and quiet is unbelievable. I lived beside the lift and was used to the noise all through the night. I found it hard to go to sleep the first few nights here because it was so quiet."

Some 600 families have been rehoused so far under the Ballymun regeneration project and more than 900 additional new homes are under construction.
